Why AI Development Needs a Command Center, Not Another IDE

We've been so focused on making AI agents smarter — better code completion, better reasoning, better tool use — that we've overlooked the second-order consequences. The real disruption isn't that AI can write code. It's what happens to everything built on top of the assumption that it can't.
The End of Skill Trading
For over 200 years, since Adam Smith's pin factory, our economic system has been built on a single premise: specialization creates efficiency. You get really good at one thing, I get really good at another, and we trade.
This premise created job roles. A "frontend engineer" is really a container for purchasing frontend execution capability. A "QA engineer" is a container for purchasing testing expertise. Companies are, as Coase explained in 1937, structures that exist because the cost of skill trading in the open market is too high.

When one person plus AI can cover what previously required a team of specialists, the need to trade skills collapses. The transaction cost that justified the existence of specialized roles — and the organizations built around them — approaches zero.
This isn't speculation. We've observed it firsthand: one person plus AI producing 460,000 lines of production code with 3,200+ test cases in 28 days. That's roughly 8-15 engineers working 6-12 months in traditional estimation.
The efficiency gain isn't just "AI writes code faster." It's the near-complete elimination of coordination overhead — no standups, no context-switching between people, no waiting for handoffs, no alignment meetings.
